Is A Line Pump Enough For A Small Domestic Pour?

Most small domestic concrete jobs do not need the reach or output of a large boom pump, and that is exactly where the line pump earns its place. Line pumps work comfortably at lower output rates, which suits the pace of most small domestic pours. On this scale of job, the rate at which concrete is placed is almost always governed by the finishing crew rather than the pump itself, and a line pump runs well within those constraints. 

There is no pressure to rush the finish, no risk of the pump outpacing the crew, and no complexity in managing the output rate throughout the pour.

Projects Where Ground Level Access Is Sufficient

When the placement point can be reached by hose running along the ground, a line pump is entirely sufficient. On most domestic jobs, the hose route runs along the side of the house, through the gate, and across the garden to the pour area. For pours involving one ready mix truck load, the setup and breakdown time of a line pump is well matched to the scale of the work. Some pours must be completed within a narrow time window, either because the mix specification demands quick placement or because weather conditions shorten the working time of the concrete. Line pumps work well when the pace is flexible, but they are not the right choice when speed of placement is a fixed requirement rather than a preference.

Sites Where the Placement Point Is Elevated or Far Away

Line pump hose runs perform well across flat or gently graded sites up to around 40 to 60 metres on even ground. Beyond that distance, or where significant changes in level increase friction along the hose, output drops and the pump becomes less effective. 

Placing concrete into elevated positions such as upper floor slabs or suspended decks is also outside what a standard line pump can reliably achieve.

What to Confirm Before Booking

Getting these three details right before calling a supplier avoids the most common problems that show up on pour day, and all three can be confirmed with a short site walk and a rough volume calculation.

Calculate the Volume First

Work out the total volume of the pour before contacting a supplier, including a contingency of around five to ten per cent. Use that figure as the first check:

  • Under 10 cubic metres: A line pump is almost always sufficient
  • 10 to 15 cubic metres: A line pump works well with no time pressure on a standard domestic job
  • Above 15 cubic metres or multiple truckloads: Discuss whether the line pump’s output rate matches the pace the job requires

Check the Hose Route in Advance

Walk the route from where the pump vehicle will park to the placement area and estimate the total distance. Work through these steps:

  1. Measure the flat distance from the pump position to the pour point
  2. Standard setups work efficiently up to around 40 to 60 metres on flat ground
  3. Account for any changes in level, tight bends, or sections where the hose must be lifted
  4. If the route is longer or more complex than this, raise it with the supplier before confirming

Plan the Washout Before the Crew Arrives

  • Washout Area: Identify a spot where the pump and hose can be cleaned with water after the pour. Concrete washwater cannot go into surface drains, so the disposal point needs to be planned.
  • Ground Conditions: Check where the pump vehicle will stand. Soft or recently disturbed ground can cause problems during the job, so flag anything unusual when confirming the booking.
  • Site Access: Let the supplier know about any restricted hours, neighbour agreements, or access limitations before the crew is scheduled.
